THE THIN PLACE

In November 2021, I spent a week inside St. Peter’s Health in Helena, Montana, during a devastating COVID surge. Working alongside frontline staff, I photographed the quiet labor of care under extreme pressure: the routines, the exhaustion, the tenderness, and the grief.

A chaplain at the hospital described the feeling of being in a “thin place,” where the distance between the earthly and the sacred feels close. This series witnesses what it means to live and work in a thin place on the frontlines of healthcare.
